The War Years – Immediately after the attack, Hawaii was galvanized into action
“Martial law was in full charge of almost everything that happened.
“Everyone was inoculated, because there was fear of chemical warfare and poisoned water supplies. Also, gas masks were obtained by the thousands and given to everyone, even small children (see photo of me and my two-year-old brother wearing our gas masks). My little brother’s mask was almost as big as he was.
“We were required to keep our masks with us at all times, so we carried them to school and even while playing. Remember, this was wartime, and you did what you were told. Obedience was considered part of being patriotic, and everyone wanted to be patriotic.
“The masks were made of a rubber-like material, and smelled bad. They also completely covered your face, and some people became upset while wearing them even for a short time, such as during a practice air raid drill.”
